In Japan, the same word, Ao, was originally used for both green and blue. The greener shade of blue later became known as "Midori", but at first it was not considered a seperate colour, just a variation of Ao. Over time, Midori became recognized as its own colour, yet not all references were classified. That's why, even today, traffic lights in Japan are still called "blue".
